Puppy Introduction

Why are puppy introductions important?

Getting puppies to the salon early is crucial for their overall health and happiness with grooming,  as it helps them acclimate to grooming routines and reduces anxiety about future visits. Early grooming introduces young dogs to essential practices, making these experiences more familiar and less stressful as they grow. Establishing these habits early on creates a positive relationship between the dog and groomer, ultimately contributing to a well-groomed, happy, and confident adult dog.

When can they come in?

Puppies can come for their first visit as soon as they have had their second set of vaccinations. Introductory sessions can be carried out up until the age of 6 months. It is recommended you bring them in as soon as possible whilst they are in their prime learning stages.

What happens during their visits?

Grooming these fluff babies requires special care, attention, and techniques to ensure a positive experience for both the puppy and the groomer. Here’s what to expect with our intros:

1st Session:

A gentle introduction to the salon’s sounds, tools and smells.  Your pup will get a light brush, nail clip, ear clean and a trim in areas needed, such as under feet/sanitary area/inside ears/inbetween eyes. A little introduction to the dryer sound in the background and of course lots of cuddles and play time!

2nd Session:

After a couple weeks, if all has gone ok in first session and feel your pup is ready, you can bring your little one back for a gentle bath & blow dry, following brush, trim, nail clip and cuddles again!

Further sessions:

Your pup can continue to visit  for intro sessions until they are ready to book in for their first full groom (this is usually around the age of 6 months).

Every dog works at it’s own pace and we will never rush them into anything they aren’t ready for. You will always be advised at the end of each session on what should be the next step!

What can i do at home?

A regular grooming routine can be established at home to maintain your puppy's coat and comfort between professional grooming sessions.

Start by gently brushing your puppy's coat using the correct brush suitable for the coat type to remove loose fur and prevent mats. When relaxed, give them little massages around areas that don’t often get touched, such as legs/feet/tail etc. This will help with desensitisation, making your pup happier and more comfortable with handling.

Gradually introduce these grooming activities as fun bonding moments, using lots of praise and biscuits if you’d like to create a positive experience, but do be careful to only use treats as reward and not as distraction.
